The new institute will help to maximise the benefits of 'spin out' enterprises delivering public services

A new body aiming to inject innovation and social value into public service delivery was launched today.

The Transition Institute (TI) is an independent centre for research formed 'to inspire and facilitate new delivery models', particularly social businesses that are ‘spun out’ from existing public sector services.

Co-founders Social Enterprise London and NESTA said the institute was ‘based upon conversations with passionate supporters of public services, shaped about the need for informed, impartial debate about new emerging structures.

‘Together we want the Transition Institute to provide the space and platform for these debates and to developing the understanding of how to maximise public and social value as organisations transition from the public sector to social economy.’

Mark Johnson, managing director at specialist public service law firm TPP Law, said: ‘There is a pressing need for a central bank of resources, expertise and information which public sector managers can turn to for support around this agenda. I believe that the Transition Institute will play a vital role in collating and disseminating that know-how.’

John Craig, managing partner at the Innovation Unit, said: ‘The Transition Institute has the potential to enable not just transfers from the public sector but the transformation of public services.’
