Raghda El Ebrashi, founder of Alashanek Ya Balad, receives an award for youth innovation and achievement from Jordanian King Abdullah II

The Jordanian King Abdullah II Award for Youth Innovation and Achievement has been won by an Egyptian social enterprise.

Alashanek Ya Balady's founder is only 25 years old but the organisation has already set up four social businesses as part of its regeneration work in Old Cairo.

Founder Raghda El Ebrashi, who was profiled in the 'Lunch with...' feature in April's Social Enterprise, said her organisation had won many awards from the West but this was the first award from an Arab country.

‘Arab countries have started to recognise the need to mobilise youth efforts and recognise successful models,' said El Ebrashi.

She said the prestigious award would help highlight the potential of social enterprise.

‘In the Middle East in particular, we still have the traditional stereotype about NGOs and social projects in general. Recognising social entrepreneurship as a new concept will for sure influence policies and public conceptions.'
