£2m shared between 60 social enterprises in Santander awards

2 November 2012

Sixty social enterprises have been awarded prizes totalling £2m in a new community business support programme from Santander.

The winners of the bank’s Social Enterprise Development Awards (SEDA) were due to be announced at a celebration event held at London social enterprise The House of St Barnabas today.

The awards are part of Santander’s commitment to supporting small businesses and were created to help established social enterprises with the potential to increase their impact but in need of a financial boost.

The awards feature three prize levels - £50,000, £30,000 or £15,000 - dependent on turnover, and in June social enterprises were invited to enter the competition with details of their development plans and how a SEDA award could support the growth of the business.

Santander said the UK’s 68,000 social enterprises played ‘a vital role in local communities’.

Steve Pateman, head of banking at Santander, said: ‘The calibre of entrants from across the country was outstanding and our winners all provided exceptional development plans, demonstrating significant potential to increase their social and environmental benefits.

‘These organisations are already showing just how successful a social business can be; generating income by doing good and reinvesting their profits back into the local community.  We’re looking forward to supporting their future growth, ultimately helping to create jobs and contribute to economic development in the UK.’

Alongside the prize money, winning social enterprises will receive access to support from Santander including mentoring programmes, funding for internships and business courses and training. Winning organisations will also receive input from their local Community Foundation, administrators of the SEDA scheme, which will work with them to assess the social impact of their business on local communities.

Selection of SEDA Winners:

  • Bristol’s Arnos Vale Cemetery will use its £50,000 award to fund an outdoor learning centre to provide lessons, workshops and an education programme based on the cemetery’s wildlife.
  • PHASES Social Enterprise renovates empty properties in south London, providing work experience in construction to homeless people and leasing the homes as social housing once complete. The £15,000 will help to develop new contracts with private and public sector landlords.
  • Fallin Community Enterprises, a bike recycling, maintenance and repair service, will use the £50,000 SEDA prize to extend its ‘Recyke a Bike’ project in Falkirk and beyond.
  • Creggan Country Park is a 100-acre site that offers recreational facilities for the Derry community. The £30,000 award will fund the purchase of additional boats and inflatables for families to use on the lakes, and equipment for an assault course, to increase visitor numbers.
  • Vine Social Enterprises is a range of businesses providing retail, hospitality, horticulture and manufacturing services in Walsall providing work experience for long-term unemployed. The £50,000 award will fund new equipment to extend their Grounds Maintenance Services.
  • Hyndburn Used Furniture Store recycles donated furniture and sells refurbished items and white goods to excluded and low income families across Lancashire. With the £15,000 award they will buy a charcoal retort to convert waste wood into saleable high quality charcoal.
  • The Cyrenians collect surplus food from the food industry and distribute it to charities and community groups in the Tyne and Wear area. The £15,000 award will enable the enterprise to expand into Tees Valley.
