A host of the most influential figures in social enterprise have set out their mission for 2011 in a new Society Media film made and screened at the Good Deals social investment conference yesterday.
The production was filmed and edited in a mere 24 hours thanks to a mammoth all night effort by the Be Inspired Films team and features such names as civil society minister Nick Hurd, the father of venture capital in Europe Sir Ronald Cohen, the head of sustainability at Marks & Spencer Mike Barry and a host of well-known and less well-known social entrepreneurs.
Hurd, Cohen and the government’s Big Society advisor Nat Wei all focused on the establishment of the Big Society Bank as their mission for 2011.
Hurd said: ‘My mission for 2011 is to work with government to make it much easier for social enterprises to deliver public services and to set up the Big Society Bank to make it much easier for social entrepreneurs to access the capital they need.’
Cohen said: ‘My mission in 2011 is to do everything I can to get the Big Society Bank established and properly funded.’
Barry said his goal was to increase the use and influence of social enterprise across M&S stores and its supply chain.
‘My mission for 2011 is to scale social entrepreneurship across Marks & Spencer, across every store, every factory, every farm, every product we sell, we want to make this difference to our bottom line, to society and the environment,’ said Barry.
Head of community banking at RBS Duncan Sloan said: ‘In 2011 I want to see social enterprise become embedded as business as usual, where the bank really embraces this sector as a real opportunity to support enterprise with a social purpose.’
Rod Schwartz, CEO of ClearlySo, said his organisation’s mission for 2011 was to get £5-10m of capital from high-net-worth individuals into at least a dozen social enterprises.
Banker to the Queen Coutts has partnered with ClearlySo to achieve this and managing partner of Coutts Entrepreneurs Andrew Haigh also goes on the record with his mission.
Haigh said: ‘My mission for 2011 is to connect more investors with social entrepreneurs to help them achieve their vision of this new world we’re building.’
The Good Deals team would like to give a special thank you to the Be Inspired Films crew who made the film possible. They are James and Raj who recorded over 25 hours of footage, Vince who did live vision mixing of all the main sessions from the two days and especially Anthony who was up most of the night making sure that the film, started at 2pm on Monday was ready to premiere at the conference by the final session yesterday afternoon. They also streamed the final session onto Facebook.

Of course I have watched the video which has some gems from social entrepreneurs. Just pointing out that the feature advertising the video did not include one practicing social entrepreneur with a quote about what we see for 2011 rather than what people see for us. End of exchange.

If you just watch the film, you will see the likes of Julie Devonshire, Ben Ramsden, Amanda Jones, Ian Black...I could go on! And if they are not social entrepreneurs, who the lummy is?

Not one current social entrepreneur is featured in your article above. This reads like a fund-raising brochure chasing respectability by featuring the good and the great as patrons and promoting sponsors. Decent and well meaning as they are the 'new world' wont be built by patronage from Coutts, bankers, ex-financiers and politicians. We're the ones that will make the difference - so include us in the headlines and live up to, and believe in, the title of your magazine.
