£5m funding for online social entrepreneurs

21 October 2009

Entrepreneurs who use the internet to make a positive impact on society are set for a funding boost thanks to a partnership announced yesterday between UnLtd and the UK's largest internet-related charity, the Nominet Trust.

The Nominet Trust is a charity supported by social enterprise Nominet - the organisation which administers domain names ending in .uk. The trust was set up with an initial £5m and is looking to support as many internet-based social entrepreneurs as possible.

CEO of UnLtd Cliff Prior said: 'UnLtd has a history of finding fantastic people with talent and passion to transform the world in which they live, and supporting them to become successful social entrepreneurs - over 16,000 people to date.

'The Nominet Trust awards programme will enable UnLtd to build on this success by helping a new wave of people create social benefit through the internet.'

The Nominet Trust is also partnering with the Office of Digital Inclusion with the aim of helping more people in the UK to get online, especially the four million people who are the most disadvantaged.

Nominet Trust chair Jonathan Welfare said: 'Through these partnerships, Nominet Trust will be able to provide funding, advice and expertise that will allow a greater number of internet-related projects to make a real difference to society.'

Here's one example, where a blog raises awareness and explores solutions as a precursor to the delivery of a strategy paper which puts these solutions forward as recommendations. The recommendations are implemented by two governments and within 2 years results are returned in the form of social impact.
