RBS SE100 ‘sets social enterprise procurement record’

10 June 2010

More than 90 per cent of the budget for the RBS SE100 awards event last night was spent with social enterprises.

The RBS SE100, organised by Social Enterprise, is the first index of its kind charting both the growth and impact of UK social businesses. Last night saw the crowning of the first SE100 Growth Champion, Impact Champion and Trailblazing Newcomer.

Billed as‘an event for social business, delivered by social businesses’, venue hire, event organisation, hosting, catering, film production, programme print, music and trophies were all provided by social businesses.

Social Enterprise editor Tim West told the audience of more than 150 people: ‘We think we have set a record in the number of social businesses involved in putting this evening together.’

Leading Scottish social enterprise CEiS were event managers, catering was from Café Sunlight, and the venue, the Garden Museum in Lambeth, is a trading charity.

Film footage was provided by The Wise Group, whose head of public affairs, former BBC Scotland presenter David Robertson, was the evening’s host.

Music was supplied by artists from the east London social firm Core Arts, and the hand-crafted, recycled silver trophies were made by Maya Selway, a member of designer/maker enterprise Cockpit Arts, based in south London.

The photographer, Charlotte Tolhurst and the programme and report printers, Calverts co-operative, are listed on ‘seewhatyouarebuyinginto.com’, a new online labelling scheme encouraging transparency and ethics in business, on which communications agency Society Media, co-owner of Social Enterprise magazine, is also listed.
