'If businesses do not increase their awareness of sustainability they run the risk of severe damage to their bottom lines'

Marcus Hill

A leading supplier and distributor of biodegradable and recycled food packaging, eco cleaning products and bespoke eco packaging across the UK, London Bio Packaging (LBP) was set up in 2005 by Marcus Hill when he became aware of the staggering amount of waste produced in the UK.

'I was shocked by the statistics and it persuaded me to look into environmentally friendly packaging alternatives,' says Hill, who has an MSc in environmental technology and business.

The business has grown rapidly and recorded a turnover of just over £1.5m in 2007/8.

Such success is representative of a growing number of companies committed to the environment, and conscious of the damage apathy about environmental impacts could cause the wider business community.

As Hill says: 'If businesses do not increase their awareness of sustainability they run the risk of severe damage to their bottom lines and will miss out on a key opportunity over the coming years.'

Alongside competitive prices for eco-packaging and first class customer service, LBP has spearheaded the first 'closed loop' service for biodegradable packaging in the UK. This involves supplying customers with packaging made from plant material, which after use is collected and composted into fertiliser to grow more plants.
